2011 Mazda2 -- Big Small Car News
by Casey Williams

The big small car news coming out of the recent Los Angeles Auto Show centered on the Ford Fiesta’s imminent arrival to the American market. But, over at the Mazda stand, executives flaunted the first domesticated version of the Mazda2, which shares a vehicle architecture with the Fiesta. Both cars promise a new level of refinement, style, and fun in very small packages. Being Mazda, its version comes with a healthy dose of Zoom! Zoom!

Mazda2 orignally debuted in Europe, Japan, and Australia in 2007. Since then, it has won over 48 awards from around the world. It was selected as the “2008 World car of the Year” at the 2008 New York auto show. Smaller than a Mazda3, but bigger than a Mini, the Mazda2 offers practical economy with a performance flair.

A smily face connects the “2” to other new Mazdas, while a strong wedge line down the size gives the car an aggressive stance. Inside, a simple instrument cluster, high quality materials, and usable space for four should put the Mazda2 at the top of the subcompact mountain.

As far back as the GLC, 323, and Protege, Mazda earned a reputation for cars that are as practical and economical as any Honda or Toyota, but are just a little more fun to drive. A stiff body structure, well-engineered suspension, and quick steering will ensure enjoyment every time you leave the driveway. A hatchback with fold down rear seats are the perfect shopping helpers.

Mazda will release technical details and pricing closer to launch next summer, but expect prices to start under $14,000, making it competitve with not only the Ford Fiesta, but also the Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, Chevy Aveo, Nissan Versa, and upcoming Volkswagen Polo. It will be the most-affordable potion of Zoom! Zoom
